Location Details

U.S. Senator and Secretary of State Daniel Webster, a well-known figure in 19th century American history, once owned this sanctuary. He was deeded the land by President Buchanan, and the adjacent road is named in Buchanan’s honor.

Eventually the sanctuary ended up in the hands of Genevieve Casey, whose family owned it for about 40 years. Genevieve wanted to see the land protected permanently and therefore sold it to the Michigan Nature Association in 2000. Three habitats predominate in this 53-acre sanctuary: a large marsh in the north; groves of pine and cedar in the south; and a low-shrub and lichen barren area that lies in the center.
