Located in St. Clair County, 7 miles north of Capac, Louis G. Senghas Memorial Nature Sanctuary, originally called Redwing Acres, was MNA's first nature sanctuary. The sanctuary was originally named for the red-winged blackbird that was known to nest here in the 1960s along with dozens of other bird species. The sanctuary was renamed in honor of Louis G. Senghas and dedicated on May 15, 2008. Louis and his wife Joan were two of MNA's original thirteen founders. Louis was MNA's first President and involved in many important projects.
The sanctuary was the last section of the Capac swamp before it was drained in 1965 by the Federal Mill Creek watershed project against the wishes of the MNA. The sanctuary still is one of only three places in Michigan where American slough grass can be found. The sanctuary can be reached by Root Road and Bailey Road.
