The Green River Nature Sanctuary protects 40 acres of land surrounding the Green River off M-66 north of Mancelona. Like the Cedar River, the Green River is one of Michigan’s finest trout streams. The sanctuary is home to the hermit thrush which served briefly as a symbol of the MNA between 1965 and 1970. Sanctuary visitors can see fallen cedar logs in the river. The cold water temperature prevents the logs from decaying quickly. It is estimated that some of the logs fell over a hundred years ago.
